MARIETTA, GEORGIA
Located in the center of Cobb County, Georgia, Marietta is the largest city in the county as well as the county’s seat. As of 2010, the city had a population of 56,579, which makes it one of the largest suburbs of the Atlanta metropolitan area. It is believed that the city earned its name after Mary Cobb, whose husband, Judge Thomas Willis Cobb, was a U.S. Senator, superior court judge and the namesake of the county.
Along with much of the area, Marietta offers a luscious green environment to its residents and visitors. In the past, Marietta has endured everything from vicious wildfires to Union invasions at the time of the Civil War. The city was the origin of the episode known as the Great Locomotive Chase, in which a small party of undercover Union soldiers hoped to isolate the Chattanooga area from Atlanta by seizing a train, called The General, and destroying the railroad on their way. The soldiers failed their mission and all were tried and convicted as spies after which they were hanged by the confederacy for their crimes.
Today Marietta offers its residents a quiet environment filled with activities including museums, live theatres, parks and unique restaurants. The city is home to Marietta College as well as a Lockheed Martin manufacturing plant, Dobbins Air Reserve base and the headquarters for dental provider company Kool Smiles. Some notable names that refer to Marietta as their hometown include TV actor Ty Pennington of Extreme Makeover: Home Edition, former Speaker of the House Newt Gingrich and sole survivor of Torpedo Squadron 8 at the Battle of Midway, George H. Gay, Jr.
