Located in the greater Atlanta metropolitan area, Kennesaw is a city filled with national and historical recognition. Located just 20 miles outside of the state’s capitol, Kennesaw is home to a population of approximately 29,783 people. In 2007, the Family Circle magazine chose the city as one of the nation’s “10 best towns for families” because of its hometown feel and abnormally low crime rate.

Along with much of Cobb County, Kennesaw has a history filled with railroads and the Civil War. During the 1830’s when the Western and Atlantic Railroad was being built in those areas, the city was born when a number of shanties arose to house the workers a grade up from the Etowah River. Later, the town came to be named Kennesaw from the Cherokee Indian work for “cemetery, or burial ground.” At the time of the Civil War, Kennesaw was home to the training camp known as Camp MacDonald from 1861-1863.

Residents and visitors can relive the history of the former “Big Shanty” area by visiting Southern Museum of Civil War and Locomotive History in downtown located next to the Western and Atlantic Railroad tracks on Cherokee Street. The museum is home to The General, a locomotive that played a major role in the Great Locomotive Chase in 1862. Kennesaw’s historical value was recognized nationally when First Lady Laura Bush declared the city a Preserve America Community.

Recently, Kennesaw has been subject to media attention because of its controversial mandatory gun possession law. Adopted in 1982, the Code of Ordinances § 34.21 states that “every head of household residing in the city limits is required to maintain a firearm, together with ammunition therefore.” The statute was passed in order to “provide for the emergency management of the city, and further in order to provide for and protect the safety […] of the city and its inhabitants.” Gun rights activists at the time and currently point to the abnormally low crime rates, which decreased since the law was passed. While some research claims that the law had no part in reducing the crime, the overall crime rate has decreased by more than 50% since 1982, which is coincidentally the year the ordinance was adopted.
