POWDER SPRINGS, GEORGIA

Powder Springs is a small town located in the southwestern part of Cobb County, Georgia. The town was first incorporated as Springville in 1838 when settlers who were seeking gold forced the Cherokee Indians off of their land on the march known as the Trail of Tears. Within the city limits are found seven water springs that contain some 26 different minerals. The mineral tend to turn the surrounding sand a gunpowder-like color, which inspired the name Gunpowder Springs. The name was later shorted to Powder Springs in 1859. During the Civil War, Powder Springs saw its fair share of warfare including the scuffle at Lattermore’s Mills in 1864, which was a part of the larger Battle of Kennesaw Mountain and General Sherman’s Atlanta Campaign.
