Acworth Attorneys

Located in the foothills of the North Georgia Mountains along the Etowah River, Acworth, GA is full of history and southern culture. Like most of Cobb County, Acworth was established after expelling the natives of the former Cherokee Indian Nation in the early 19th century. Founder and western railroad engineer Joseph L. Gregg named the town after his own hometown in Acworth, New Hampshire. Acworth was incorporated into the state of Georgia in 1860, 30 years after its establishment.

During the Civil War, Acworth was occupied by Union soldiers and held under martial law for six months until it was burned down by General W.T. Sherman, leaving the town’s citizens destitute. It has since then recovered, refusing to give into the destruction and now stands as a reminder of this nation’s history.

With a population of around 20,000, Acworth offers a quiet, peaceful living environment to its citizens. Although it has no specialized industry, the town is only 40 minutes away from the state’s capital of Atlanta, where many of its citizens commute regularly for work. Also known as “The Lake City”, Acworth is nearby the enjoyable Lake Allatoona, which is used for fishing, boating, camping and other outdoor recreation.

The city is governed by a board of five men, known as the Board of Aldermen, who serve staggered four year terms. The board-manager governing structure fills the primary policy making roles and oversee the executive functions of the city. The mayor, who is defined by the city as Chief Executive Officer of the city, is elected every four years and serves to preside at all meetings of the Board. Together, Acworth’s government adopts ordinances, determines city policies, approves the municipal budget and executes various other governmental duties.
